One of the most influential metal bands of all time, Iron Maiden, also happens to have one of the most recognizable mascots of all time – Eddie the Head. Eddie has appeared in almost all of the artwork commissioned by the band and has provided for some very unique t-shirts, posters and concert artwork. Almost as old as the band itself, Eddie was introduced in 1980 and has been used up to today. Beginning first as a papier-mache stage back drop, he has grown to be so much more than that.
Celebrating this iconic figure is the Iron Maiden shirt, Eddie Evolution. This shirt is available in the Iron Maiden store and has become a fan favorite as Iron Maiden continues to perform. The shirt features different incarnations of the Eddie mascot, and is emblematic of a traditional Iron Maiden shirt. Classic albums such as Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and the Trooper as both represented as their version of Eddie graces the shirt. The most recent incarnation, Final Frontier, is also represented and shows how Eddie has evolved into a gruesome and awesome mascot.
The Eddie Controversy
Like any good rock band, Iron Maiden has suffered a degree of controversy over their iconic mascot. Public groups spoke out against the depiction of Eddie on the Number of the Beast album, which showed Eddie controlling Satan like a marionette. This image was featured on the album, as well as several different t-shirts, including the Iron Maiden shirt, Eddie Evolution. The band was also met with controversy over the album of ‘Sanctuary’, which depicted Eddie standing over the body of Margaret Thatcher. Regardless of this controversy, Iron Maiden shirts, especially those depicting Eddie, remain a staple of any metal heads wardrobe!
