Mayhem is a black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo, Norway.
The band name is taken from the Venom song, "Mayhem with Mercy".
Mayhem has always had controversy around them as a result of the various murders, suicides and other forms of violence that surrounded the band in the early years.
These controversies have often overshadowed the music, even more so in recent years due in part to the Internet and magazine articles.
In April 2008, the artwork to their 1995 bootleg album Dawn of the Black Hearts was voted the most controversial album cover of all time.
Over time Mayhem has evolved through a variety of black metal styles, delving at times into areas of dark avant-garde industrial and electronica.
