Death Row Records was founded in 1991 by Suge Knight and Dr Dre. It is primarily a hip hop artists, and has signed numerous influential and well recognized artists, such as Snoop Dogg, Tupac and Nate Dogg. Most of the artists left the label following the murder of Tupac, and the record label was later sold to WIDEawake Entertainment Group, Inc. The label suffered many legal troubles over the years, including founder Suge Knight’s implication in the murder of Notorious B.I.G and Dr. Dre’s lawsuit against the company demanding the rights to The Chronic.
The Death Row Records store features numerous iconic artists and albums that have released music on the record. Prominently featured in the Death Row Records merchandise is Snoop Dogg (who has since renamed himself Snoop Lion). The ‘Spray Paint logo’ Snoop Dogg shirt available portrays a photo of Snoop Dogg with the classic Snoop Doggy Dogg logo. Also available is founder Dr Dre’s album, The Chronic, in a Dr Dre t-shirt. Although only available in limited sizing, this album was responsible for popularizing Dr Dre as a solo artist and for popularizing the sub genre of g-funk.
This influential and well known record label is responsible for the rise in popularity of a number of different artists and musical acts. Although known owned by another company, and throughout their legal troubles, they have carved a spot in hip hop history for themselves.
