A staple in most kids’ lives, Mr. Potato Head and his life partner Mrs. Potato head are a classic reminder of simpler times. The iconic toy was first produced and sold by Hasbro in 1952. In the beginning, kids would use an actual potato; while the toy set include the signature face pieces with which to decorate it. However, there was concern over using vegetables as they were bound to spoil and using food for a children’s toy in postwar America was seen as irresponsible, so Hasbro began including a plastic potato mold with the toy in 1964.
Mr. Potato Head was the first toy to be advertised on television, and has been in the spotlight ever since. Not only did the veg-celebrity have a starring role in the Disney/Pixar thrillogy, Toy Story, but in 1998 even had his own short-lived television show. Through it all, the love of his life Mrs. Potato Head, stood by her starchy man, since her introduction in 1953!
